We recommend bringing your pet in for a wellness exam annually. If they are a senior we recommend every 6 months.
Dogs and cats age much faster than humans, which makes it more important for us to be able to detect signs of illness early. We generally consider pets to be seniors at approximately 7 years old and as they age, they become more prone to disease.
What to Expect at Your Pet’s Wellness Visit
During your pet’s wellness visit, we will start by performing a comprehensive physical examination. A vaccine schedule, intestinal parasite screening, prevention, and other diagnostics will be discussed depending upon your pet’s lifestyle and age.
Taconic Veterinary Center in Cortlandt Manor recommends annual blood screening to aid in the detection of diseases. Early detection is crucial for a higher rate of success.

Important Aspects of Pet Wellness
To keep your pet well for as long as possible, we utilize the following:
COMPREHENSIVE PET EXAM
A physical exam is the first step in evaluating your pet’s condition and using the information the exam yields to provide the best care for their needs. Your vet will examine your pet from nose to tail tip, checking their skin, coat, ears, eyes, teeth and gums, joints, and abdominal organs. They will also check your pet’s heart and lungs for anything abnormal. With their expert care, your vet might be able to detect underlying issues that you could not have noticed on your own. This is why it’s important to bring in your pet annually for their wellness exam!
INTERNAL MEDICINE
We can also provide internal medicine, which involves diagnosing and treating various diseases of the heart, abdominal organs, and other areas of the body. Some of the conditions we can diagnose and treat:
- Kidney/urinary disease
- Heart disease
- Pancreatitis
- Cancer
- Internal infections
- Liver and gallbladder disease
- Endocrine disease (thyroid, adrenal, diabetes)
Taconic Veterinary Center has experienced vets and staff, along with advanced medical equipment for helping pets manage chronic disease. If your pet needs treatment, our team is here for you seven days a week.
Dental Care
Dogs and cats need to have good dental hygiene to avoid inflammatory infections like gingivitis and periodontal disease, which can develop quickly without intervention. Another risk of periodontal disease is that it can become severe enough to cause a systemic infection that affects the heart, liver, and kidneys. In other words, good oral hygiene can potentially add years to your pet’s life! Taconic Veterinary Center recommends annual oral exams for dogs and cats, along with regularly schedule teeth cleanings that include full-mouth dental X-rays and enamel polishing.
Client Education & Consultation
Educating you, the pet owner, is another priority for our team. You care about your pet and want what’s best for them. And to provide the best care for them, you need to understand your pet’s health and all their various needs. Our team is more than happy to serve as an educator to you, and also as a partner you can rely on to answer your questions and offer guidance when it’s needed.
Early Disease Detection
A physical examination allows us to get an overview of your pet’s condition, but that overview is only skin deep. To learn more about your pet’s overall health, we need to look below the surface with the help of our in-house laboratory equipment. We can perform blood, urine, and fecal tests to assess your pet’s organs and blood cell counts. The information we obtain through these tests can help us detect internal disease at the earliest possible stage.
